A table of rates would be great here, I know.

Unfortunately, I can't put one up, and here's why: every project is unique. While many projects share common characteristics, each project brings with it its own combination of scope, needed research, onsite meetings… And all these mean a project will have its own unique cost. But, even though I can't tell you right off how much your project will cost, I can tell you…

How to save money on your project:

There are some steps you can take that will help you save money on your project. A big part of the cost of any project is actually tied up in preparatory work such as doing research, conducting interviews, and that sort of thing. There's a lot you can do to streamline this process to save me time and you money. These include:
  • Provide a thorough collection of background information about your product or service, such as technical documents and brochures. The more I know about your product or service, the better I can write about it.
  • Provide a thorough collection of technical documents, brochures, etc., about your competitors' product or service, if relevant. This allows me to highlight the advantages you offer over your competitors.
  • Provide a list of people it would appropriate for me to interview, and let them know to expect to hear from me.
  • Provide a collection of materials you have used in the past. This can give me an idea of what you're looking for (or steering away from).
  • Keep onsite meetings to a minimum. No, I'm not trying to avoid meeting with you. It's just that the time I spend driving is time I could spend writing, so I need to bill for travel time. And paying me to sit in my car and not write your project just doesn't seem like the best use of your money. (Now, if you want to take me to lunch, well, that's different…)

Clearly, not all of the above are suitable for all projects, but you get the idea.

So, how much will it cost?

To see what your project will cost, contact me. After discussing what your project will entail I will put together a bid letter. This letter will specify the details of the project: the actual project parameters (that is, just what it is you need done), a summary of what's included in the price beyond the product (research, meetings, etc.), the project time frame, and, of course, the price itself. The letter will also state the amount of deposit, if necessary, for first-time clients or especially large projects.

A final note:

The initial discussion and the drafting of the bid letter are done at no cost to you, and does not obligate either of us to undertake the project.
